Mid-Year Pivot: What Will You Make Possible Next?

Summer tends to hit the brakes, and that’s not a bad thing. It’s the perfect pause point to catch your breath, but also to get serious about what comes next.

Whether your board just wrapped up the fiscal year or you’re halfway through your calendar, this is your launchpad for the next six months. What still needs your attention?  Where can your leadership have the biggest impact before year-end? And, maybe most importantly, how can you protect your energy so you stay effective, not just busy?

Here are a few ways to step into this next stretch with clarity and intention:

Think Ahead: What Needs to Happen Next?

Instead of staring in the rearview mirror, look through the windshield. Try these prompts with your board or team:

  • What’s next? What needs focus in the next six months?
  • What would success look and feel like on December 31?
  • Where can we double down, and where can we let go?

These kinds of check-ins help you lead forward, not in circles.

Realign Your Focus

This is a great time to revisit your core priorities, not for a postmortem, but to recommit to what matters most.

  • Are your leadership team and board aligned around your biggest goals?
  • What’s still possible before the year wraps up?
  • Where might a small shift create a ripple effect?

A little focus now can prevent a lot of scrambling later.

Protect the Energy You’ll Need

Momentum doesn’t just happen; it takes fuel. And too many leaders power through summer only to fizzle out before fall. This month, try:

  • Saying no to what’s not mission-critical
  • Building in time to recharge, not just rest
  • Protecting your energy like the resource it is

Fall doesn’t have to be frantic. It can be focused, with the right prep now.

Lead With Purpose, Not Panic

You don’t need to overhaul everything. But small, focused choices now can shape a more grounded and purposeful second half—for you, your board, and your mission.

Make space for the big questions. Invite collaboration. And most of all, lead forward with clarity.

Words To [lead] By

As you consider your next steps this year, remember the words of Arthur Ashe: “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” A mid-year pivot doesn’t require perfection or a full reset, just clarity and intention. You already have what you need to lead forward. The key is choosing to act on it, one focused step at a time.
