As a nonprofit leader, it’s crucial to run efficient and effective meetings that get results in your company. But how do you keep everyone on the same page, while leading a productive meeting that makes a lasting impact?

Beyond Resolutions: A Strong Start

Resolutions can inspire, but preparation sustains. These four simple practices can help teams/boards turn early momentum into meaningful progress.

1️⃣ Reflect before you reset

Pause briefly before pushing ahead. Name one strength you are carrying forward and one thing you want to do differently this year. Reflection keeps any reset grounded.

2️⃣ Align goals with your strategic plan

Before finalizing goals, ask how each one supports your larger priorities. Alignment reduces debate and keeps energy focused where it matters most.

3️⃣ Recruit with the year in mind

Identify potential leaders early. Invite participation, offer shadowing, and begin conversations now so transitions feel intentional rather than rushed.

4️⃣ Choose clarity over chaos

Confirm priorities, roles, and meeting dates early. Clear expectations make everything else easier to manage.

Ask one grounding question at your next meeting:

“If we look back at this year and feel successful, what will we have done well together?”
Use the answers to guide priorities and decisions.

A shared understanding of what matters most helps boards avoid reacting to everything and focus on what truly moves the mission forward.

January brings energy and urgency. New goals, new plans, and a strong desire to get moving. But as John Wooden wisely reminded us, “Don’t confuse movement with progress.”

Strong teams/boards know that progress is not about how quickly things start, but how intentionally they begin. Taking time to align, reflect, and clarify at the outset helps ensure that early momentum turns into meaningful results that last well beyond the first few weeks of the year.
